China Chair Project

The introduction to the China Chair Project and its catalogue begins with a quote by Richard Artschwager: “Art is useless; furniture is useful. If you sit your ass on it, it’s a chair, if you walk around and look at it it’s art …In fact, the more layers of meaning, the better.” Curated by Paul Hughes, this exhibition features designs by artists given the task of creating a chair. Most of the artists chosen for the commission had never worked in three-dimensional media prior to this, and were given no instructions as to medium or design functionality. The result, however, was a collection of fantastic usable pieces of sculpture on display in Miami last week. Shown above is Space Cadet by the Unmask Art Group.
1 spinalgelcactus China Chair ProjectThe pieces in the China Chair Project were sculptures of a variety of media. Xiang Yun’s Spinal Gel Cactus with Footstool is a voluptuous mass of hand-molded silicon, while Nuts and Balls and All Things Nice is a glittery, glamourous chair based on something as simple as the lowly nut. The hand-carved wooden Royal Flush, Let Them Eat Cake by Qu Guangci is one piece that is definitely more sculpture than chair, but spectacular all the same. More exhibits from the China Chair Project after the jump.

Dubai in 2050
I remember, when I was in Dubai, in 1999 (not sure), an artisit designed a poster that had an envisioned image of Dubai in 2050. You can check it out below:
 Amazing Future Projects Of Dubai
And me and my friends used to laugh at the poster, that it’s impossible for Dubai to look like that. But now.. I think that’s going to be possible in just another 10-15 years!

SKY PENTHOUSE | FIVE FRANKLIN PLACE

SKY PENTHOUSE | FIVE FRANKLIN PLACE | Image
$16.000

Five Franklin Place, the first major American building by acclaimed Dutch architect  Ben van Berkel of UNStudio, is a celebration of the art of building, the translation  of a daring international vision into a perfect local expression, and proof that the practical and the sublime, the historic and the new, can exist in ideal balance — all in a simply extraordinary place to live.

The triplex penthouses of Five Franklin Place are graced with perfectly proportioned living rooms, floating stairways, and a silent glass cab elevator. These penthouses embody the kind of dramatic but embracing atmosphere one usually associates with the sets of memorable films that paint a fantasy picture of life in New York City. Here, the fantasy takes full form.

Every detail of these residences has been meticulously designed by UNStudio and installed with the expert involvement of B&B Italia.

The panoramic views from the penthouses master bathrooms are unsurpassable and, as throughout the residences, create an environment in which one is truly immersed in the surrounding cityscape.

THE WAVE HAMMOCK

THE WAVE HAMMOCK | Image
$23439
The Swedish designer duo Erik NYBERG and Gustav STRÖM presented the unique leisure creation WAVE at MAISON & OBJET OUTDOOR INDOOR in Paris September 5-9, 2008. WAVE is available in white, cappuccino, black or turquoise with two base options allowing for integration in the terrace or embedment into the ground.

It measures an impressive 12 ft x 9.5 ft x 8 ft, yet stands on a single point. The construction gives it its unique floating impression, and allows it to withstand the elements. Plus, it can rotate 90° around the base, giving it additional flexibility depending on the position of the sun.

The materials in WAVE consist of electro-polished stainless steel and perforated fabric, one type for the upper roof section, and another for the lying section. The fabric is semi-transparent, and at the same time it offers protection from the sun, blocking 86 percent of the suns rays.

The idea is to convey the feeling of lying underneath the canopy of a tree, surrounded by a defined, natural space.
