Utrecht And Its Architecture

Utrecht is the fourth largest city in the Netherlands. It takes 30 minutes to get there by train from Amsterdam and only 12 euros. The city has a lot of interesting architecture examples, and this post is about one of them: The Utrecht University that opened in 1636.

Masterpiece of Industrial Architecture

Combustion plants have been in the centre of discussions for long. Someone is against, someone is not. Some people alarm about emissions, others just build them. 2500 plants in the world, 140 plants are planned to be built only in Europe. They work in Paris, Antwerp, Copenhagen, Monaco...
But even in this sphere there is a place for beauty and design.
Can a utilitarian enterprise be beautiful? An Austrian architect Hundertwasserhaus was breaking stereotypes for all his life and he left not only amazing buildings but also bright unusual industrial enterprises. Like this combustion plant Maishima in Osaka.

A House Lifted Using Balloons

At dawn on Saturday 5 March, National Geographic Channel and a team of scientists, engineers and two world class balloon pilots successfully launched a house measuring 16 feet by 16 feet and 18 feet high, using 300 eight-foot coloured weather balloons from a private airfield east of Los Angeles. The launch - inspired by the Pixar film Up - set a new world record for the largest balloon cluster flight ever attempted. The house and balloons measured more than 10 storeys high and reached an altitude of over 10,000 feet, flying for approximately one hour. The record will be part of a new National Geographic Channel series called How Hard Can It Be? Which will premiere in 2012.

Tower - Made Of Books!

Popular Argentine artist Marta Minujin has created a 25-meter-high spiraling Tower of Babel made from 30,000 books written in various languages.
This modern version of the Tower of Babel was designed in celebration of Buenos Aires’ designation as World Book Capital 2011, by UNESCO, and local authorities say it represents the ideas of pluralism and diversity which also characterize the Argentine capital city. This isn’t Minujin’s first experience with book installations; in 1983, when democracy was restored in Argentina, she built a replica of the Parthenon from books banned by the former military dictatorship.
The tower consists of a spiraling metal frame and around 30,000 books written in most of the world’s languages and dialects. You can find all kinds of books, from dictionaries and encyclopedias to software manuals and classic novels, arranged on six levels. The bottom level features a collection of books from around the world, the first and second levels are for American books, the third and fourth are reserved for Europe, the fifth for Africa and the sixth for Asia. 16,000 of the books were donated by 52 embassies in Buenos Aires, while the rest were provided by Argentine readers.

The 10 Inspirational Home Designs for Future

1. MercuryHouseOne
MercuryHouseOne is a home designed by Arturo Vittori of the Italian architecture firm Architecture and Vision. Vittori is a member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and his interest in technology is obvious to anyone who sees the home’s unique raindrop shape.
MercuryHouseOne is a mobile home, but any similarity to an RV ends there. It runs entirely on solar power and has a thin marble exterior, and according to Architecture and Vision’s website , “the interior is equipped with [the] latest lighting, audio and video technologies in order to maximize the user experience.”

Here are ten amazing futuristic home designs. Some of the designs are bold, some are bizarre, and some seem unlikely to get past the drafting table. However, they all address current challenges and create new rules.

 2. Airdrop House
The Airdrop House is so futuristic and forward-thinking that it has yet to get past the artistic rendering stage, so anyone who wants one will have to wait until some distant tomorrow. However, they are being designed to provide emergency shelter to disaster survivors , so hopefully the need for them won’t come up too often.
The home is designed by Andrew Maynard Architects in response to the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The home is intended to be air-dropped into disaster areas and used as a temporary shelter. Its design also permits the growing of plants on its surface, to provide both food and shade.

3. Birds Island

The Leaf House

Located in southern Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the Leaf House by Mareines + Patalano Arquitetura is perfectly suited for the hot and humid climate where it stands. The roof acts as a big leaf that protects the enclosed spaces of the home from the hot sun.

With no corridors, the inside and outside of the Leaf House almost appear to be fused. The verandas and the in-between open spaces allow trade winds from the sea to pass trough the building, providing natural ventilation and passive cooling. Rain water is harvested from the roof for re-use.

The architects see the design as low-tech eco-friendly solution that has the greatest impact. When designing the tropical beach house, the architects sought to enhance the interaction between man and nature, instead of separating them completely.

Solkan Bridge World’s Largest Stone Arch

Solkan Bridge is a 220-metre long stone bridge over the river Soca near Nova Gorica in western Slovenia. With an arch span of 85 metres it is the second longest stone arch in the world and the longest stone arch among train bridges. It was built in the time of the Secession, between 1900 and 1906. The bridge was designed by R. Jaussner and L. Oerley, at first with 80-metre long stone arch.

Between 1904 and 1905 the bridge was built by construction company Brueder Redlich und Berger from Vienna. In the spring of 1904 builders had to change the project because of the lightweight soil and increase the arch to 85 meters. It is built of 4533 stone blocks. On July 19, 1906, the railway from Jesenice to Gorizia was completed and the Austrian heir Franz Ferdinand travelled across the bridge. In 1916, during the first world war, the Austrians destroyed the bridge as they left Solkan, so that the invading forces couldn’t use it.
