The Amazing Oasis Of Crescent Lake

It is a known thing that pilgrims and other travelers have traveled down the Silk Road for many many years. It is quite normal to think that they needed someplace to rest while walking for miles in the warm dessert. That is what the Crescent Lake has been for them. It has a oasis that is so beautiful they say it is seductive as a woman.

The Crescent Lake oasis is located right before the Gobi dessert, and six kilometers from the city of Dunhuang. The area is today threatened, because the water level has sunk 25 feet and therefore the crops are not as they used to be. More and more people are settling down in Dunhuang, and the ecology is in danger because of human impact.

Fortunately they have come up with some strict rules, called the Three Forbids; the first is saying that no wells are allowed, the second that no additional farmland is allowed, and the last that no more people can settle

Ancient Caravanserais That Are Left Behind

If you don’t know what a caravanserai is, let me explain. Back in the days when travelers used the Silk Road to come to his destination with goods or whatever, they had these staging posts so the traveler could rest. Without the posts the traveler wouldn’t make it through the desert. There were thousands of them in Asia, Africa and parts of Europe, but today they are dusting away. The caravanserais are usually built in a rectangular shape with a walled exterior, and they had very wide doors so travelers with camels could come in and rest from the long travels.

Some of them also have a courtyard where you feel like you have entered an oasis. Some of the rooms inside are used as shops, and they still are today, but most of the caravanserais around the world are abandoned and left behind, and many would say that it is a shame because of their story and their beauty. Another founding in a desert is this spectacular crystal cave.

The Watts Towers – A Creation of a Lonelly Man

The Watts Towers are some weird towers that were built 50 years ago by Sam Rodia. He was a Italian immigrant and construction worker that was lonely because he was divorced and he couldn’t see his children. Loneliness obviously made him built and built. Located in Los Angeles, California the towers are 30, 29.5 and 16.76 m high.

The materials used are many: steel pipes and rods wrapped with wire mesh, porcelain, glass, and weird enough also objects such as bottles, bed frames and sea shells. They are built with no plan and no design; he just built them how he felt, and he used about 33 years to finish his work. He used hand tools and random window-washer’s equipment, and some of the children from nearby got him materials he could work with.

Some of the children even destroyed some of his work because their parents didn’t like Rodia. When it

Abandoned French Town in Cambodia

Outside the town of Kampot in southern Cambodia there is an abandoned French town called Bokor Hill Station. It was built in 1922, and the building of the town is just stunning but really old-looking. If you wonder why it was abandoned the answer is because of a war in the 70′s.

The town has a main building that has an amazing view over the ocean, and the other buildings are everything from a catholic church and houses to a casino. The town was built to work as a resort for the colonial French settlers that wanted to escape insanity of Phnom Penh.

The buildings are today really rusty and old, but it’s an open tourist attraction, so you can go anytime and visit

Fairytale Houses With Thatched Roofs

As we all know today they build houses with “normal” roofs, and you’ve probably never seen a thatched house which is a very old roofing method and is used in both tropical and temperate climates.

With thatching the roof of the house is built out of dry vegetation. The vegetation can be out of straws, water reed, heather and rushes that are layered so it can easily shed away the water from the inner roof.
